How does Myotherapy work?

One of the main reasons we have aches and pains in the muscles is that over time we develop trigger points. What are trigger points? A trigger point is the correct terminology for what most people refer to as “knots”. They are sensitive sore spots in the muscle/tissue that are hyper-irritable, Most trigger points can send referred pain or tenderness to other areas of the body.

There are two types of trigger points:

Active trigger points: These trigger points are extremely common, usually sending referred pain and tenderness to other areas of the body, due to repetitive movements, trauma, increased activity and so on. It can also restrict range of motion and joint mobility.

Latent trigger points: The majority of people are unaware that they have latent trigger points, as the pain is less apparent and is mostly present when the affected area is being palpated. Over time these trigger points develop and can lead to stiffness, tension and limited range of motion and weakness. Latent trigger points are largely the result of an injury, pre-existing issue, or condition. If you are not maintaining treatments and stretching over time, the muscle shortens and it can develop into an active trigger point, causing more pain.

The primary objective as a Myotherapist is to locate the trigger points by using different techniques and tools such as:

  • Dry needling

  • Cupping

  • Soft/deep tissue work

  • Myofascial release

  • Assessment/testing/palpation

Sports/Postural taping

The tape we use (rocktape ), is used by elite athletes and by health professionals around the world, however you do not need to be an athlete to experience the benefits of taping!

Taping is highly beneficial to people suffering from various injuries, swelling, poor posture, fascial chain dysfunctions and even pregnant women.

How does RockTape work?

When applied correctly, RockTape’s elasticity causes the skin to form a twist effect, which decompresses the tissue directly below the skin. This results in three things:

  1. Fluid effect- improving blood and lymphatic flow in the taped area.

  2. Mechanical effect- improving the slide and glide between tissue layers.

  3. Neurological effect- altering the perception of pain and improving body awareness.

What are the benefits?

  • Pain relief.

  • Reduced swelling and inflammation.

  • Accelerated recovery from bruises and contusions.

  • Prevents and/or relieves muscle spasms and cramping.
